This is a follow up on my buddy Michael Brown in NFL Europe. he is doing well and will hopefully the Falcons active roster next season.
Like a draft-eligible collegian doing everything in his power to impress pro scouts, Falcons linebacker Michael Brown has become a veritable jack of all trades for the Berlin Thunder.

"I'm doing pretty well," Brown said. "I'm just trying to take it one game at a time and when the plays have come my way, I've been fortunate enough to make the majority of them."

Having started each of the first six games at right outside linebacker for Berlin this season, Brown currently ranks first on the team with a pair of sacks, third on the Thunder in total tackles with 25, and his four passes defensed are the second most of any linebacker in NFL Europe.

During the past week, Falcons running back and the 2005 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Warrick Dunn has been visiting United States troops in the Middle East with Patriots linebacker Larry Izzo. The pair traveled to Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq, visiting the troops in all instances and helping to dedicate a new USO building - The Pat Tillman Center - in Afghanistan.

McLendon, 5-10, 235 pounds, started 23 of 32 games for the Wolfpack, amassing 2,479 yards on 542 carries and 33 touchdowns in his career.

Thomas, 6-3, 205 pounds, tallied 86 receptions for 1,441 yards with 12 touchdowns for the Bearcats of Cincinnati in his last two seasons.

Tinsley, 6-0, 200 pounds, recorded 38 receptions for 445 yards and eight touchdowns in his four-year career at Tennessee.

Magner, 6-2, 196 pounds, ended his collegiate career at Bowling Green State University with a school-record 215 receptions for 2,385 yards in four seasons. His 215 receptions rank him fifth all-time in the Mid-American Conference. In his career, he caught 18 touchdown passes, threw for four touchdowns, and rushed for two scores.

Randall, 6-0, 222 pounds, became the all-time total offense leader in Virginia Tech history with 8,034 yards from scrimmage and 1,242 plays. In 2004, he earned ACC Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 2,264 yards and rushing for 511 yards.

Heaney, 5-11, 185 pounds, started seven games last season for BYU and registered 39 tackles, one interception and eight passes defensed. In his career, he played in 32 games and tallied 102 tackles, five interceptions and 18 passes defensed.

Jones, 5-10, 182 pounds, earned second-team All-Big 12 honors after ranking fourth on the Aggies with 61 tackles last season. He also tallied 4.5 sacks, one interception and eight passes defensed in his senior season at Texas A&M.

Koenen, 5-11, 195 pounds, completed his career at Western Washington University as an All Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection. He set school records for career punting average at 43.1 yards per punt on 191 attempts.

Magner, 6-2, 196 pounds, ended his collegiate career at Bowling Green State University with a school-record 215 receptions for 2,385 yards in four seasons. His 215 receptions rank him fifth all-time in the Mid-American Conference. In his career, he caught 18 touchdown passes, threw for four touchdowns, and rushed for two scores.

The Falcons agreed to contracts with the following players: WR Lawrence Bady from Boise State, LB Antoine Cash from Southern Mississippi, TE Steve Cucci from Houston, FB Kevin Dudley from Michigan, CB Brandon Heaney from Brigham Young University, CB Byron Jones from Texas A&M, P Michael Koenen from Western Washington University, WR Cole Magner from Bowling Green State University, RB T.A. McLendon from North Carolina State, QB Bryan Randall from Virginia Tech, WR Hannibal Thomas from Cincinnati, and WR Derrick Tinsley from the University of Tennessee.

Bady, 5-10, 189 pounds, recorded 59 receptions for 1,192 yards with five touchdowns in the past two seasons for the Broncos of Boise State. Bady also rushed 20 times for 154 yards with two touchdowns in his career.

Cash, 6-1, 223 pounds, a former free safety turned linebacker registered career-highs with 95 tackles and four sacks in 12 starts for the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss last season. In his career, he played in 49 games and tallied 266 tackles, 8.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

Cucci, 6-5, 268 pounds, played in 45 games for Houston, earning 16 starts and finishing his career with 41 receptions for 484 yards (11.8 avg.) and five touchdowns.

Dudley, 6-0, 238 pounds, cleared rushing lanes for a Wolverines team that featured four 1,000-yard rushers during his four-year career at Michigan. He started 20 of 37 games, gaining 13 yards on three carries and 61 yards on eight receptions, while also recording seven special teams tackles.

The Atlanta Falcons announced today the release of WR Jimmy Farris, S Siddeeq Shabazz and T Steve Stewart.

Ferris, 6'0, 200 pounds from Montana played in 30 games for the Falcon's as a reserve wide receiver and a special teams player.
Shabazz, 5-11, 200 pounds, was from New Mexico State and played in 15 contests for the Falcon's. He made 8 special team tackles last season.
Stewart, 6'4, 310 from Michigan State was an offensive tackle who spent all of 2004 on the practice squad.

Wish them the best of luck when trying to get picked up by another pro team.

One of the premier junior college players in the country during his two seasons at Coffeyville College, Shropshire was overshadowed by defensive end George Gause during his time with the Gamecocks. The physical run stuffer has a wide base, squatty body and strong leg drive that could see him excel at the next level as a nose guard.

Shropshire played defensive end, running back and tight end at Andrew Jackson High School. He earned first-team Junior College All-America honors from J.C. Gridwire at Coffeyville Community College. He was rated the No. 7 prospect on the SuperPrep JUCO Top 100 list and named the 2002 Defensive MVP of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. He recorded 54 tackles and six sacks his freshman season at Coffeyville in 2001, followed by 67 tackles and six sacks his sophomore season.

Regarded as one of the premier kickoff returners in college football, Cobb proved to be quite an effective running back for the Spartans in 2004, setting a school record by averaging 7.6 yards per carry. His return skills are what brought him notoriety, as he returned four kickoffs for touchdowns during his two seasons at MSU, just one shy of the Big Ten Conference record of five, set by Purdue's Stan Brown (1968-70).

Cobb was as an all-purpose back at Clark High School. He averaged 14.2 yards per touch as a senior. Against Valley High that year, he rushed for a season-high 182 yards on 10 carries and scored on runs of 75, 40 and 40 yards, plus returned a kickoff 85 yards for another touchdown. Cobb also lettered in track, finishing second in the 100 meters at the 1999 Nevada Class 4A Championships and posted a personal best 10.4 seconds.

Omilaye was considered the top offensive lineman in the Ohio Valley Conference in his senior season. He is an intelligent blocker who played at the Division I-AA level, but had outstanding games in his opportunities against I-A opponents. The leader on the Golden Eagles offensive front, Omilaye can line up at either tackle position. He has great footwork and tremendous strength to build upon. Omiyale has learned extensively from his on-field experiences and through diligent work in the weight room, he has exhibited vast improvement in his size and strength.

Omilaye was a two-time Most Valuable Lineman at Whites Creek High School. He earned all-region and second-team all-state laurels, and also lettered in track and field (shot put and discus) and basketball.

Omiyale missed most of his 2001 season at Tennessee Tech due to a strained left knee medial collateral ligament. He moved into the starting lineup at left tackle as a sophomore, starting every game in 2002. Omilaye started to gain recognition for his play in 2003, as he totaled 135 knockdowns with 16 touchdown-resulting blocks while grading 88.7 percent for blocking consistency.

An exciting playmaker who was the heart and soul of the Golden Eagles defense since his sophomore year. Not only did he excel as a weakside linebacker, but also provided big plays on the special teams coverage units.

Before enrolling at Southern Mississippi, he was a standout linebacker, wide receiver and running back at Elkmont (Ala.) High School. Boley earned Class 3A all-state honors as a senior, recording 104 tackles with five interceptions and gaining 1,015 yards rushing and 746 yards receiving that year. He also averaged 44.1 yards per kickoff return during that campaign.

He redshirted in 2000 at Southern Mississippi and saw action in nine games on special teams as a reserve outside linebacker in 2001, making five tackles. He took over strongside linebacker chores in 2002, posting 142 tackles (89 solos) with eight sacks, 16 stops for losses, two fumble recoveries, six pass deflections and a 54-yard interception return for a touchdown. Boley earned All-Conference USA first-team and College Football News All-America second-team honors as a junior. He registered 151 tackles (101 solos) with 11 sacks and ranked seventh in the nation with 22ÃÂ½ stops behind the line of scrimmage in 2003.

One of the most coveted junior college players in the country in 2002, Davis began his collegiate career as an outside linebacker before shifting to defensive end as a senior. Davis originally signed with Florida State out of high school, but did not qualify academically. He spent the 2001-02 seasons at Jones Junior College, playing linebacker as a freshman before shifting to defensive end the following year. He totaled 65 tackles with 12 stops for losses as a freshman, followed by 70 tackles and eight sacks during his sophomore campaign.

Davis was an all-state linebacker and running back at Auburndale (Fla.) High School, rushing for over 1,000 yards as a senior. The first-team All-American (Rivals.com) was a member of the Florida Times Union Super 75 and Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Super Southern 100. He played in the national all-star game in Dallas and competed in the prestigious Cali-Florida Bowl.

Carolina selected quarterback Stefan Lefors from Louisville in the fourth round (121st overall) of the NFL Draft. In 33 games with 25 games for the Cardinals, he completed 416-of-630 attempts for 5,853 yards and 38 touchdowns with 13 interceptions. As a senior, Lefors was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award after leading the nation with 181.74 passer efficiency rating.

Beck was an all-league defensive back, wide receiver and punter at San Lorenzo Valley (Calif.) High who earned all-state honorable mention on defense as a senior. He led his team to a 12-1 record and both the Santa Cruz County Athletic League title and CIF-Central Coast Section championship. Beck was also an All-CCS defensive back and all-state honorable mention as a junior. The Recreation Administration major comes from a sports-oriented family. His father, Randy, played football at UCLA and his mother, Terry, competed in swimming.

Beck was recruited as a receiver for Cal Poly, but ended up appearing in 10 games as a middle linebacker as a freshman. He earned All-Independent honors in 2001, as he led the team with 73 tackles (48 solo), including 2ÃÂ½ sacks and seven stops for losses. He was again an All-Independent pick at middle linebacker in 2002 after posting a team-high 113 tackles (62 solo), 4ÃÂ½ sacks and 13 stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Beck was Independent Defensive Player of the Year after registering 128 tackles (68 solo) with four sacks, 13 stops for losses, a 41-yard fumble recovery and four pass break-ups in 2003. The middle linebacker experimented at the rover position during the 2004 preseason and also saw action there during the course of the year.

The senior was a standout performer for the Lincoln (Port Arthur, Texas) High School team where he was coached by present Iowa assistant Carl Jackson. Babineaux competed as a linebacker, defensive end, punter and fullback. He was a member of the school's top-ranked (in the state) basketball team and also lettered in baseball. A first team all-conference linebacker and team captain as a senior, Babineaux also handled punting duties (40.0 avg.). He was raised by his mother and has a younger brother, Jordan, who is a strong safety for the Seattle Seahawks.

Babineaux was an immediate contributor upon arriving at Iowa in 2000. He played in 11 games, starting vs. Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State as a fullback that year, but only carried once for a 4-yard gain and made two catches for 12 yards. A right tibia fracture during 2001 spring drills kept him on the sidelines for the season.

The Atlanta Falcon's signed Roddy White, the speedy wide receiver from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Roddy was the 27th pick in the draft and was Atlanta's first round draft pick! Hopefully Michael Vick will be able to utilize his speed for a lot of scoring this season. The Falcon's have more picks that i will talk about later on.

The Atlanta Falcons announced today that they have re-signed restricted free agent T Kevin Shaffer. Terms of the contract were not announced.

Shaffer, 6-5, 290 pounds, is a three-year veteran out of Tulsa who was selected as the second of two seventh round selections (244th pick overall) by Atlanta in the 2002 draft. He played and started in 15 games at left tackle in 2004, as well as both postseason contests, helping the Falcons become the number one ranked rushing offense in the NFL.

The 2005 National Football League schedule was released by the League office today.

The Falcons will play three nationally-televised games on Monday Night Football at the Georgia Dome and for the first time in team history a Thanksgiving Day match-up at Detroit. With one more contest on ESPN, the Falcons will be featured in a total of five Sunday/Monday Night nationally-televised games, the most in team history. The previous high was three Sunday/Monday Night nationally-televised games in 1999 when the team played twice on Monday Night and once on ESPN and in 1992 with a pair of Monday Nighters and a Thursday Night ESPN game.

This article hits home with me because I played with Michael Brown while I was at the University of Louisville. A quite man with a huge motor, i looked up to Mike Brown when i was playing for the cardinals. I am proud of you Mike!!

For the second time in as many weeks, one of the Falcons reps in NFL Europe this season garnered Player of the Week honors.

This week, linebacker Michael Brown (Berlin Thunder) was named the NFLEL Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Thunder's 15-13 victory against the Hamburg Sea Devils.

Brown recorded 3 tackles and came up with 2 key sacks for a total of 18 lost yards. His first sack came in the opening quarter as the Sea Devils were threatening to score the game's first touchdown having moved to the Thunder 4-yard line. Brown sacked Hamburg quarterback Casey Bramlet for an 8-yard loss and the Sea Devils were forced to settle for a Todd France field goal.

Not all players who make a NFL rosters are immediately thrown into action during the regular reason. Many are put on the practice squad or may be on injured reserve. Those players that do not participate during the regular season are sent to NFL Europe (and play for an affiliate team) to develop their skills and try to make the roster for next season.
Romby Bryant was recently named NFL Europe Offensive Player of the Week for week 1.

Bryant opened his NFLEL career by catching a 51-yard pass from Centurions quarterback Kevin Thompson on Cologne's first offensive play of the new season. He ended his day by catching a game-winning 56-yard strike from Thompson with 4:55 remaining in Cologne's thrilling 24-23 defeat of the expansion Hamburg Sea Devils.

Bryant ended his first NFLEL game with 3 receptions for 107 yards -- a whopping 35.6 yards per catch average -- and a touchdown.

The Atlanta Falcons announced that they have signed veteran DT Brandon Mitchell. The terms of the contract were not made public.

Mitchell, 6-3, 290 pounds, is an eight-year NFL veteran who played the last three seasons (2002-04) with the Seattle Seahawks. Mitchell played in 62 games with 37 starts for the Patriots from 1997-2001. In 2001, he started 11 of 16 games played and two postseason contests, including Super Bowl XXXVI where the Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams 20-17.

The Falcons today announced that they have released linebacker Chris Draft.

A seven-year veteran, Draft, 5-11, 232 pounds, spent the past five seasons playing for the Falcons after being claimed by Atlanta off of waivers from San Francisco in February of 2000. Draft has collected 498 total tackles and 6.5 sacks in 63 career games including 37 starts.

Draft played in 14 of the Falcons regular season games in 2004, starting 13 contests and registering 81 total tackles, three passes defensed, a forced fumble and an interception. He notched four solo stops in the Falcons two postseason contests last season.

Draft was originally selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round (157th pick overall) of the 1998 NFL draft.

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have re-signed veteran QB Ty Detmer and S Keion Carpenter to one-year contracts. Terms of the contracts were not announced.

Detmer, 6-0, 189 pounds, is a 14-year veteran from BYU. Detmer served as the Falcons' third quarterback in every contest except one last year. Detmer has completed 546 passes in 946 attempts for 6,351 yards with 34 touchdowns in his career for six NFL teams.

Carpenter, 5-11, 205 pounds, is a six-year veteran from Virginia Tech. Carpenter did not play last year due to a right knee injury suffered in the offseason and was placed on injured reserve on June 10, 2004. Carpenter has played in 68 NFL games with 46 starts since signing with the Buffalo Bills as a rookie free agent in 1999.
Detmer will add depth at the quarterback position while Carpenter will be be looked upon to step back into the role of a starter. They will add the veteran experience that is needed to help this young team stay on the right track.

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have signed free agent LB Ed Hartwell. Terms of the contract were not announced. Hartwell, 6-1, 250 pounds, played four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens after being selected in the fourth round of the 2001 draft out of Western Illinois. Hartwell posted 141 tackles last year, second on the team to LB Ray Lewis, with 83 solo tackles and also added one forced fumble in 15 starts to help the Ravens finish sixth overall in the NFL in total defense. With Hartwell's help, the Ravens defense allowed just 3.6 yards per rush, tied for the best in the AFC.

Hartwell looks to crack the starting lineup for the Falcon's and be a force in the middle. This addition to the Falcon's defense is going to make the Falcon's a force to be reckoned with!!

In a re-match of last season's NFC Championship game, the Falcons will play host to the Eagles for their respective season openers in the first Monday Night Football game of 2005. The Eagles won the NFC title last January in Philadelphia, defeating the Falcons 27-10.The Falcons and Eagles will round out the NFL's opening weekend with their contest on Monday night at 9 p.m. ET. It will be the Falcons 25th appearance on Monday Night Football in franchise history, and their first since the 2003 season.

The Falcons own a 9-11-1 all-time regular season record against the Eagles.

The Atlanta Falcons annonced Wednesday that four more teams will be added to their pre-season schedule. After a battle with the Indianapolis Colts in Japan on August 6th, the Falcons will face these four opponents:
1) week 1 vs. Baltimore (Georgia Dome)
2) week 2 vs. Tennessee (Georgia Dome)
3) week 3 vs. Jacksonville (Alltel Stadium) - Jacksonville, Florida
4) week 4 vs. Miami (Pro Player Stadium) - Miami, Florida

note: The Jacksonville game will be on a Thursday night and be broadcasted on ESPN. Time are yet to be determined

The Altanta Falcons announced Friday that they have signed free agent Ronnie Heard. The terms of the contract were undisclosed. Heard, 6-3, 215, is a six year veteran from the University of Mississippi. Heard played five seasons for the San Francisco 49ers and tallied 24 starts in the 69 games he participated in. After starting 14 of 16 games in 2004, heard had a career high 79 tackles, one interception, one fumble recovery, and 6 broken up passes. This is a key additional force to the Falcon's defense. Heard will bring youth and experience to a new level and help the Falcons dominate defensively.

The Atlanta Falcons announced Monday that they have signed offensive guard MattLehr. The terms of the contract were not announced. Lehr, 6'2, 305 pounds, hails from Virginia Tech and rejoins his long teammate Micheal Vick with the Falcons. Lehr brings a bit of experience to the Birds as he has started 22 of his 43 total NFL games. Originally selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2001 draft (137th overall), Lehr started just two of seven games played for the Cowboys before being released and aquired by the St. Louis Rams. This young strong offensive lineman will have to step up and take control while blocking for his old teammate in college once again.

Resigning Mathis, McCrary......Scary for opponents

On March 11, the Atlanta Falcons announced that they had resigned Cornerback Kevin Mathis and Fullback Fred McCrary. The terms in both contracts were disclosed. Mathis, from Texas A&M-Commerce and McCrary from Mississippi State, both bring back their 9 years each of experience back to the Georgia Dome. Mathis, 5'9, 185 pounds, has played the last three years with the Falcons after starting his career as a Dallas Cowboy in 1997. In his short three seasons, Mathis has totaled 114 tackles, six interceptions, and nine passes defended in 40 total games, including 15 starts.

McCrary, 6'0, 245 pounds, was signed by the Falcons on December 15, 2004 after injuries plauged the Falcons. McCrary started the final two regular season games as well as the two playoff games, busting holes wide open for tailback Warrick Dunn. McCrary caught just two passes for 23 yards for the Falcons in 2004.

On March 9, 2005 the Atlanta Falcons signed free agent and Pro Bowl special teamer Ike Reese. The terms of Ike's contract were not discussed. From Michigan State and selected by the Philadelphia Eagels in the 5th round of the NFL draft in 1998, Reese was considered a key part of the Eagles linebacking corps for the past 7 years. Also, Reese is considered on the best special teams contributers, which earned him a spot in the pro bowl in 2004. Known as a very consistant perfomer for the Eagles, Reese has played in 112 regular season consecutive contests. The Falcons are making strategic moves to help their special teams get even better. With the addition of Ike Reese there is not telling how many kickoffs Allen Rossum will return next season!
